Millhouse, Brookside
Millhouse, Brookside
[8 Nov. 1974]
John Cole (1830-1898), a flour miller, built this house and a mill in 1872 on an acre of land on the Irwell River. Under succeeding owners the mill eventually became the Brookside Roller Flour Mill producing the Rising Gem brand of flour. It was in operation until 1945 when it was pulled own. The cottage was built with five lower and two upstairs rooms, kauri doors and double-sash windows. The solid floors were held by square-cut nails. Brookside was named after Thomas W. Brooks (b. 1840) who farmed there from 1865 and gifted land as a site for a school and a church. See The Press, 18 Nov. 1974, p. 19.
