From his first novel Gilmore’s Dairy through Biographi to Mr Pip he has produced a string of singular works. Perhaps his best known other novel is The book of fame – a wonderful retelling of the pioneering 1905 rugby tour of England. He is also the editor of the great Montana Estates essay series.
