  • scoobies
  • 122 x 60 cm

STARS: The four bright stars represent the Southern Cross as Lyttelton faces South.

HILLS: Lyttelton is surrounded by hills and situated in an extinct volcano. There are seven hills in recognition of the Tangata Whenua and the Fairy Tale of the Seven Sleepers (also known as the 7 sisters) whose faces can be seen along the tops of the hills at the Southern end of the harbour.

SEAGULLS: where ever there’s fishing boats there’s seagulls. Lyttelton's fishing fleet supplies markets nationally and internationally.

THE BOAT: Since the arrival of the first 4 ships the port has had an enormous impact on the lives and employment of Lyttelton.

FISH: The stylised Patiki pattern represents the fact Flounder were prolific in the bays in the early years before dredging. The meaning “abundance” also reflects the port with its constant flow of goods and people.

AROHA: Lyttelton epitomises community spirit, from the Community garden, Saturday Market, Time bank, Festival of Lights, Summer Street Party and welcome to Lyttelton packs for new arrivals to town. The residents love living here and this is reflected in a close knit community.
