Wartime milk delivery, corner Alpha Avenue and Normans Road, Bryndwr, Christchurch
[1942]
In 1942 petrol rationing came into force and milk was delivered by horse float with two women staffing each float. The milk was delivered right to the door. This photograph shows a Devondale Dairy Company milk float. The company was owned and operated by Ben Johns and Ernie Forbes from their dairy on the corner of Johns and Main North Roads. Children used to enjoy a ride by hanging on to the side of the float. A house just visible behind the float belonged to a brother of a former Prime Minister of New Zealand, George Forbes
