Unveiling the memorial statue of Queen Victoria in Victoria Square on Empire Day

The bronze cast statue was produced by the English sculptor Francis John Williamson (1833-1920). It was unveiled on Queen Victoria's birthday, 25 May 1903, which was observed as Empire Day. Shown in the background are buildings in Colombo and Armagh Streets. From left are Mrs Mary Sharland, corset maker; across Armagh Street is a building which held the businesses of Joshua Harrison, bootmaker, Alice Jenner, dressmaker, Edward Britt, photographer, James Buggey, confectioner, and Whale Brothers, watchmakers and jewellers. George Treleaven & Co., general produce merchants, can be seen in Armagh Street.
