Robert Ewing McDougall (1860-1942) laying the foundation stone of the art gallery bearing his name, Botanic Gardens, Christchurch

The foundation stone was laid on the occasion of the diamond jubilee of the Christchurch City Council. On the left is Michael James McCarthy who was a leading hand at the business of John A. Tait, builder & monumental mason, 52 Cashel Street, who had produced the foundation stone using a block of granite.
