Victoria Wing, Dee Street Hospital, Invercargill
Victoria Wing, Dee Street Hospital, Invercargill
[1909]
The Victoria Wing was built to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria (1819-1901) in 1897. The people of Invercargill and Southland contributed more than £2,000 towards the cost, the remaining £2,000 coming from the central government. The then chairman of the Hospital Board, J.E. Watson, led the fundraising appeal. The original hospital had been built in 1864. After extensions to Kew Hospital in 1957, it became a wholly maternity unit. It was closed in the 1970s and demolished on 1 Mar. 1979. A McDonalds outlet has been built on the site
The postcard is incorrectly titled: Victoria Wing, Christchurch Hospital. See History of the Southland hospitals and board, 1861-1968
