The Christchurch Tramway Company's opening of the Papanui line : the trial trip on midnight of Friday June 2nd : a photograph taken with a flash in Cathedral Square.
[2 June 1905]
"Shortly before midnight seven cars, including two double-deckers, were run out to Papanui, the run from the car sheds and back taking about an hour and a half. Mr W. Reece (Chairman of the Tramway Board), the Board's engineer (Mr F. Hubert Chamberlain), Mr L. Birks (engineer to the Electrical Constructions Company) and Mr J. Wood (the Board's traffic manager) were among those who were present. The procession of brilliantly-lighted cars made an extremely pretty sight and at different parts of the route small knots of wayfarers watched their progress with considerable interest. A double-decker took the lead and a similar car brought up the rear. The run was completed without a hitch of any consequence."
