- seats for older people also need to be light-weight so that they can move them to where they want them - which is often in a shelving area
- need seating outside and by issues for older people waiting for partners etc to get books issued
- watch out for chairs with wheels on the 'smooth non-slip surfaces'
- chat zones - Lincoln Uni library has designated chat /quiet areas so that you can choose where you want to be - doesn't just mean study or recreation - could have group/noiser space with study tables etc
- CPIT library has bookable rooms for groups
- senior citizens need a few seats with a firmer seat, not too deep, and a few centimetres higher than the normal seat height, with good solid arms that they can use to push themselves upwards out of the seat, adjacent to the areas they will generally use the most - the large print. This seating area would be as inviting as the seating area for other customers
- plenty of space for mobility scooters, including indoor "parking spaces" for them
- basket trolleys
- adequate space for manoeuvring wheelchairs
- smooth non-slip surfaces
- Good lighting levels
- Ideas from Riccarton High School students who met with the architects on 18 September 2003
- "it's easier if the tables with access to computers etc are a bit higher than the ones made for manual wheelchairs to go under"
- hydraulically adjustable tables for wheelchair customers (c.f. Birminghan UK Centre for the Child)
- high school students computer training/teaching library customers, adults and children
- high school students participating in storytimes
