Waltham Orphanage, Austin Street, Waltham

This building was originally a private residence which was extended in 1905 to house children moving from the orphanage at Lyttelton. Later, under the Child Welfare Amendment Act 1927, it was registered as a children's home and so received government funding. In 1940 the Orphanage was used temporarily for convalescent soldiers. In 1941 its name changed and it became the Children's Home
