Canterbury kids rise to Reading Crusade challenge

Some of Canterbury’s keenest young readers will get a chance to meet a Crusader rugby star this Thursday at the Reading Crusade prizegiving.
The Reading Crusade is over for 2009, but has been an outstanding success with 24,000 children taking on the challenge from the Canterbury Crusaders’ rugby franchise and the Christchurch City Council, to participate in the campaign and read more books.
The Reading Crusade encourages primary and intermediate school students throughout the Crusaders’ rugby franchise area to read more, by signing up to a commitment to read six books during the campaign period. The children also get the chance to win great prizes, including attending a Crusaders training session.
The Reading Crusade prizegiving will be held on Thursday April 9 from 2-3pm in the players’ tunnel at AMI Stadium. The prizes will be presented to the winners by Crusaders Leon MacDonald, Brad Thorn and Kahn Fotuali’i.
The top 15 winners receive a prize pack and attendance at a Crusader Training Session. The 35 runners up will also receive prize packs with books supplied by Paper Plus, a mini rugby ball or other logo products and a Crusaders team poster. Signed jerseys and rugby balls go to the two top participating schools: Burnside Primary and St Andrews, South Canterbury. Prize winners are selected by teachers, in recognition of improved reading skills along with other criteria.
