Anna-Marie and Alice
Alice
Alice was a year old when she became a library member. The black and white board book contained in the Books for Babies pack was particularly successful, which lead Alice's parents to enrol her earlier than they would have otherwise. Anna-Marie says that the book helped Alice understand what books are and how they work; a visit to the library revealed many more board books that she would enjoy. Alice now insists on having stories read to her everyday. Anna-Marie believes that because new parents are faced with plenty of challenges, particularly on the birth of their first child, getting the pack was important. ‘It not only tells you that reading is important but that it is fun too,' she says.

Charlotte
Charlotte was enrolled right away as a library member after receiving her Books for Babies pack, following the example of her older sister, Sarah, who received a pack in 1992. ‘The pack has encouraged all three children to read books and look at illustrations,' says Rachel. She also notes that the library gives access to many resources, and that library visits can encourage parents to use it for themselves as well as for their children. The project, says Rachel, ‘instils in children the joy of reading.'
