Sam became a library member when he was around six months old. Jan and Norm recall that it was ‘a thrill to get the library card in the mail.' They believe that the Books for Babies pack provides a prompt for parents to start using the library, especially if they aren't very knowledgeable about books or reading. They were surprised to find that the library offers numerous resources in addition to books.

The Books for Babies pack provided Caitlin's parents with a prompt to enrol her at the library, as well as a reminder that the library has many books specifically for babies. The black and white board book received in the pack itself was particularly appropriate. Because of her early start in library use, Caitlin is now very confident whenever she goes to the library. ‘Children,' says Caitlin's mother ‘get such a lot of pleasure from libraries through an early introduction to them.' And, despite electronic innovations, Caitlin's father believes that there is ‘no substitute for a book in the hand.'
